ABOUT THE FOUNDATION
The Denyce Graves Foundation (DGF) is focused on the intersection of social justice, American history, and the arts. Deeply inspired by the achievements of America’s hidden musical figures, the Foundation is invested in doing research and educating the public about their remarkable stories of courage and persistence. From enriching our musical heritage to preparing the diverse pool of tomorrow’s vocal stars, DGF will positively impact how artists are valued in this nation, encouraging inclusive opportunity, access, and advocacy for the next generation.
Program Notes
This evening’s program, Songs for the Soul, is a journey through the emotional landscape of music, drawing from a diverse array of styles and traditions. From the exuberant energy of Broadway to the poignant depths of classical art song, the program is designed to speak to the heart and to explore the vast spectrum of human experience: joy, love, faith, longing, and resilience.
The evening begins with a playful exchange that showcases the wit and charm of musical theater. From here, the program shifts to more introspective and reflective works, moving through deeply emotional explorations of mortality, transcendence, and spiritual hope. The voices of the performers invite you into the intimate world of each piece, whether navigating the complexities of life’s fleeting nature or celebrating the lightness of being.
As we continue, the music flows through contrasting textures—intense and lyrical, dramatic and delicate. Moments of lightheartedness give way to profound contemplations on life, death, and faith. The program also introduces works rooted in the African-American spiritual tradition, which resonate with the power of endurance and divine deliverance. These works, alongside the rich harmonic landscapes of contemporary art songs, underscore the power of music to heal, uplift, and transform.
The final section of the concert brings us to familiar duets, where love and longing are expressed in song, leaving the listener with a sense of emotional closure and a reminder of the beauty and vulnerability of the human spirit.
Through these varied works, we find a reflection of life itself—its struggles, its triumphs, its moments of despair and its overwhelming capacity for joy. It is our hope that this evening's performance serves as a reminder of the deep emotional power that music can hold, and that, through it, we may find solace, inspiration, and connection to one another.
Thank you for joining us on this journey, Songs for the Soul.

WHY DGF MATTERS
The programs of the Denyce Graves Foundation (DGF) promote access and inclusion in American classical vocal arts by championing the hidden musical figures of the past while uplifting young artists of world-class talent from all backgrounds and preparing them for a successful future.
Hidden Voices uncovers and celebrates the contributions of our nation’s outstanding musicians of color whose achievements are not widely known but have an important place in our evolving American cultural identity.
Generational Voices addresses the often missed vulnerability in the careers of emerging artists; offering mentorships, advocacy, and access to top industry professionals, preparing these singers to take ownership of their career trajectories.
Shared Voices, DGF’s initiative to promote belonging, access, and inclusion, invites elite historically black colleges and universities (HBCUs) and conservatories to participate in a relationship that strives to create and encourage meaningful connections between consortium members – students, faculty, and administrators – that result in a greater awareness of the diversity within the classical vocal arts and culminate in a meaningful collaboration.
